At our Thomas plant in Selb, we combine traditional porcelain manufacturing and state-of-the-art technology. As a brand subsidiary of Rosenthal GmbH, most of our Thomas dinnerware is manufactured at the Speichersdorf facility, which is part of the Rosenthal manufacture in Selb. That is where tradition and innovation go hand in hand for both brands. Our production facilities rank among the most innovative locations in the porcelain sector worldwide. Physical properties of our hard porcelain

We use a precisely blended mixture of kaolin (50%), feldspar (25%), and quartz (25%) for the manufacture of our hard porcelain. These raw materials are finely milled in large drum mills, and then blended and forwarded to a magnetic conveyor, where iron particles are removed to prevent unsightly spotting on the final product. Other contaminants are then filtered out via a very fine-mesh vibrating screen. A hydraulic filter press extracts most of the water from the porcelain paste, while a vacuum press removes the air. Once the paste has run through these complex processes, it now becomes malleable and is ready for the manufacture of our high-quality porcelain products.

This unique manufacturing process allows the material to achieve very high tensile strength and robustness that makes our porcelain particularly durable. As a leading porcelain manufacturer, we insist on the one-hundred-percent authenticity of our stoneware as a purely natural product. Similarly, our colour glazes are created solely from natural pigments without any chemical additives. Each piece is meticulously glazed by hand, giving each plate, cup and bowl in the Thomas stoneware collection a completely unique and authentic character. The result is a glaze that will vary minutely from one piece to the next, underlining the very special handmade look of this series.

Our Thomas Nature stoneware collection is similarly created by hand using meticulous and elaborate manufacturing processes. The dinnerware is fashioned using high-quality stoneware materials, and is then fired at 1,200°C. This workflow, rounded off by an elaborate glaze, makes the stoneware made from this natural high-quality material exceptionally durable and robust.

As a subsidiary brand of Rosenthal, Thomas is one of the few porcelain manufacturers to produce its own porcelain paste and glaze based on a secret, proprietary recipe.

Our coloured dinnerware collections – like Thomas Loft Colour – feature a truly exceptional glaze, which we have developed in our production facility. Instead of a transparent glaze, we use a tinted glaze for this collection, which gives these products their extraordinary colour. The glaze is applied with varying thicknesses, allowing the white porcelain of the Loft collection to shine through at varying levels, making each item a one-of-a-kind piece.
